Department of Chemistry

B.Sc. chemistry program was started at Govt. College Banjar in Academic session 2012-13. The department offers a three years B.Sc. course in chemistry. The department offers a vibrant atmosphere to students to nurture the spirit of scientific inquiry. In brief, chemistry is referred as the science that systematically study the composition, properties, and reactivity of matter at atomic and molecular level. The scope of chemistry is very broad. The key areas of study of chemistry comprise Organic chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry.

Organic chemistry deals with study of substances containing carbon mostly; inorganic chemistry deals with study of all other elements/compounds/substances and their chemical properties. Physical chemistry deals with applications of concepts, laws to chemical phenomena. Analytical chemistry, in general, deals with identification and quantification of materials. Development of new interdisciplinary subjects like nano-materials, biomaterials, etc. and their applications from chemistry point of view added new dimension to materials chemistry. Thus, the degree programme in chemistry also intended to cover overlapping areas of chemistry with physics, biology, environmental sciences. Modified syllabus has been drafted to enable the students to equip for national level competitive exams that they may attempt in future. To expand the employability of graduates, a number of skill development courses are also introduced in this framework.

Programme learning objectives(POL):

  • PLO1: B.Sc. Chemistry curriculum is so designed to provide the students a comprehensive understanding about the fundamentals of chemistry covering all the principles and perspectives.
  • PLO2: The branches of Chemistry such as Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry and various skill based courses expose the diversified aspects of chemistry where the students experience a broader outlook of the subject.
  • PLO3: To develop scientific attitude is the major objective so as to make the students open minded, critical and curious is one of key objectives.
  • PLO4: The syllabi of the B.Sc. Chemistry course are discretely classified to give stepwise advancement of the subject knowledge right through the three years of the term.
  • PLO5: The practical exercises done in the laboratories impart the students the knowledge about various chemical reagents and reactions. Thereby, hone their skills of handling the corrosive, poisonous, explosive and carcinogenic chemicals making themselves employable in any kind of chemical industries. They are also trained about the adverse effects of the obnoxious chemicals and the first aid treatment.

Course Specific Objectives (CSOs):

  • CHEM101TH
CSO1: Students will gain knowledge of various atomic models and their limitations whereas elementary organic chemistry will revise the basics of hydrocarbons.

  • CHEM102TH
CSO2:Students will learn gaseous, liquid and solid states in detail and functional group like carboxylic acid and their derivatives along with physical and chemical behavior make the more learning of functional group chemistry.

  • CHEM201TH
CSO3: Basics of solutions, expressing solutions in terms of molarity, molality, mole fractions etc. will enhance students learning and basics of electrochemistry and conductance will make them understand practically the conductance in solution.

  • CHEM202TH
CSO4: Students will learn alkali and alkaline metals and their properties and second part of the course will give idea about chemical and ionic equilibria.

  • CHEM301TH
CSO5:Students will learn different aromatic systems which are fused ring types like naphthalene. Basic of organic structure determination techniques like UV, IR, NMR etc. will make students identify unknown compounds and functional groups.

  • CHEM302TH
CSO6: Students will learn usefulness of chemistry in industries.

  • CHEM303TH
CSO7:Students will learn postulates of quantum and rotational, vibrational motion of molecules is explained on the basis of quantum to get more idea of quantization.

  • CHEM304TH
CSO8:Students will learn d-block elements and their properties in detail. Knowledge of bonding in complexes will give idea about geometry and EAN rule obeyed by these complexes. Ionic and covalent bonding in transition metal complexes is explained by CFT and VBT. Basics of acids and bases and their theory in detail will give idea about the acidic and basic trends in periodic table.

  • CHEM305TH
CSO9:Students will learn the basics of polymers and types of polymerization.

  • CHEM306TH
CS10:Students will learn about the foundations of chemical principles such as atoms, chemical bonding, molecular structure and the chemistry of carbon.

Skills Specific Courses Objectives:

Students will learn some specific areas of chemistry through skill based courses. Basic of analytic chemistry will give idea about the significance of errors and significant figures. Fuel chemistry give idea about the fuels like petroleum and coal and their refining and processing. Students will learn about chemicals used in various cosmetics and perfumes and different adulterant used in food products. Chemical technology and business tricks will make student aware towards the future in chemistry. Different pesticides and insecticides will make students aware about their uses, side effects etc.

Practical Specific Courses Objectives:

Aim of practical courses is to give more idea about the chemical phenomenon to students so that their learning and understanding of topic is more. Students perform practical in the laboratory to understand more accurate and precise methods of analysis. Handling of different instruments like UV-Vis spectrophotometer, gas chromatography, calorimeters, pH meters etc. helps in building their interest in the experiments and research fields. The student will learn the laboratory skills needed to design, safely conduct and interpret chemical research. The student will develop the ability to effectively communicate scientific information and research results in written and oral formats. The student will learn professionalism, including the ability to work in teams and apply basic ethical principles.
