Courses Offered & Outcomes


             Courses offered: 

 

1.                  Discipline Specific Core Courses (DSC) (Credits-6)

      These courses aim to cover the basics that a student is expected to imbibe in

       this discipline, and to familiarize the students with different genres of writing.

 

2.                  Discipline Specific Elective  (Credits-6)

            These courses are advanced courses, which provided an extended scope to

            explore other domains and nurture the students’ skills. 

 

3.             Skill Enhancement Courses (Credits-4)

      These are value based courses that aim to provide hands on training to have the

      skills and competencies. 

 

4.                  Generic Elective courses (GE) (Credits-6)

      These courses are interdisciplinary in nature and provide exposure to students

      of other discipline, who opt to study these courses in English thereby

      broadening the scope of learning.  

 

5.                  Core Compulsory English courses  (Credits-6)

            These two courses are offered to all the discipline of arts stream as well as to

            the commerce stream. These courses aim at enhancing the communication

            skills of the students while making them aware of different genres like story,

            poetry and essays.

 

6.                  AECC, Ability Enhancement Compulsory Course  (Credits-4)

      This course enhances the writing skills of the students across all the streams

       viz. science, arts and commerce.

COURSE OBJECTIVES / OUTCOMES 

Enhancement of the writing skills of students across all the streams vz. Arts, Commerce and Science. The skills include – Diary writing, paragraph writing, Summary / Note taking, Letter writing, CV / Resume writing, Report writing, Feature Articles and Notice writing.

Course objectives

·         To develop skills of analysis

Course objectives:  

·           To familiarize students with the vibrant cultural diversity of India through varied literary currents in different languages across time and space  

·         To highlight the significant role played by the folk tales in making of popular culture  

·      To sensitize the students to the issues of class , caste and gender through

·      Dalit , tribal, and women voices.

British Literature ( Plays and Novel )

Course objectives / expected outcomes  

·         To acquaint the students with the literature of the 16th  c and the 19th c England – the two of the greatest periods of literary history that witnessed the maturing of Drama and Novel respectively .     

·         to acquaint the students with these genres of Drama and Novel and the similarities and differences between these literary forms and their features.  

·         To develop an understanding of the concept of plot, characterization, theme and familiarity with the literary devices and techniques for comprehensive understanding and appreciation and literary texts.

·         The study of the works of Indian writers and their translations helps the students to get familiarized with native literature and ethnic cultural values.  

·         The study of the marginalized sections of the society develops empathy among students for them and inspires them to work for their upliftment in real life as well.

Creative Writing, books and Media reviews

Course Objective/ Expected Outcomes  

 

·         The course aims at providing the students with some aids for creative writing as well as some practical advice on creative writing.  

·         A series of structured activities and exercises will help the students to express themselves in a creative manner.  

·         Analytic reading habit will be imbibed in students through book reviews.

Translation studies and Principles of Translation

    Course Objectives / Expected Outcomes  

 

·         To make the students appreciate the richness and variety of Indian Literature and explore the uniqueness.  

·         To make them understand the purpose of translation, various approaches and methods of translation.  

·         To make them realize the historical, cultural and social contents in Indian English Literature. 

·         To make them understand the role of Indian Literature in highlighting the cultural identities in their multifaced nature.  

·          To make them realize how translational studies provide space for sharing thoughts, feelings and culture with the world.

 Course Objectives:  

·             The students will be acquainted with the desirable personal attributes that enhance one’s interaction, career prospects and job performance.  

·             They will be acquainted with the difference between EQ and IQ and how they include the cognitive elements associated with non-academic skills.  

 

2.         DSE 1B\2B – Academic Writing

Course Objectives:  

·             To help students improve their language skills required for effective communication.  

·             To help the students acquire effective academic writing skills.  

 

3.         AEEC \ SEC-3 (301) – Technical writing  

        Course Code – ENG AEEC \ SEC 301 

 

     Course Objectives:  

·             To develop an understanding of the process of technical writing covering its various forms such as basics of Research Methodology, Project Reports, Memos, Agenda, Manuals etc. along with their formats.  

·             To make the students able to prepare and present Project Reports.  

 

4.             AEEC \ SEC – 4 – Business Communication  

     Course Code – ENG AEEC\ SEC 302 

 

       Course Objectives:  

·             Business Communication focuses on the entire process of communication in a professional det up thereby preparing students to work efficiently in their professional business jobs.  

·             The language skills required for effective communication will be enhanced.  

·             Students will be trained in written Business Communication as well as their presentation skills will be honed.

 

5.       GE-1 Literature from Himachal  

     Course Code – ENG GE 305 

 

      Course Objectives:  

·             To widen the scope of literature by including oral narratives transcending generations.  

·             To understand the relationship between folklore, oral narratives and culture.  

·             To make the students understand and appreciate Folklore that keeps alive the psychological patterns, instincts and archetypes of the collective word of a community.  

·      To introduce them to diverse expressions of folk and written literature of Himachal Pradesh.  

 

 

 

 

6.                       Contemporary India: Women and Empowerment  

     Course Code – ENG GE 306 

 

     Course Objectives;  

·                      To make the students understand how a gendered perspective is responsible for many evils prevalent in society. 

·                      To make them understand the concepts of class, race and gender as social constructs.  

To equip them with analytical, critical and creative skills to interrogate the biases in the construction of gender and patriarchal norms for the sake of women Empowerment after the reading of some texts pertaining to issues  of gender , patriarchy and feminism .
